Is Kosher Halal? Islamic Dietary Concepts And Practices

Often times Muslim consumers tend to assume 'Kosher' is similar
to 'Halal'. Although the slaughtering rituals of Jewish people
resemble those of Muslims; kosher and halal are two different
entities carrying a different meaning and spirit. Muslims,
therefore, are provided with the following basic information
about Kosher so they can exercise care in distinguishing halal
from kosher.

Kashrut (in Hebrew) is the system of Jewish dietary laws. Kosher
(kashur in Hebrew) means 'fit, or proper for use' according to
Jewish law. Examples of kosher are: the meat of the 'fore
quarter' of the cattle* slaughtered ritually, fruits,
vegetables, all fish that have fins, all wines*, all cheeses,

The opposite of Kosher, as applied to food in Treif (in
Yiddish), or trefah (in Hebrew) meaning 'not suitable for use',
or 'forbidden'. Trefah literally means 'torn by a wild
beast' (Exodus 22:30). Examples of Trefah are: blood, swine,
rabbit*, all shell fish*, wild birds such as wild hen*, wild
duck*, and the birds of prey.

(*) these food items exhibit a marked difference between kosher
and Halal as well as trefah and haraam. The differences are
explained elsewhere in this section.

Caution to Muslim Consumers:

Halal is a comprehensive Islamic term encompassing not only the
matters of food and drink, but all other matters of daily life.
Islam being the final and perfect Deen (religion) for mankind,
it supersedes all the previously revealed religions including
Christianity and Judaism. The rituals in all matters were
perfected by Islam (al-Qur'an 5:3)

According to Islamic Jurisprudence, no one except Allah can
change forbidden (Haraam) things into lawful (halal) for vice-
versa. It is forbidden for people to change the lawful (Halal)
things into unlawful (Haraam), or vice-versa.

Halal is a unique Islamic concept and eating dhabiha
(Islamically slaughtered) meat is a distinguishing part of a
Muslim's identity as expressed by Prophet Muhammad (S)

Salient differences between kosher and halal are:

Islam prohibits all intoxicating alcohols, liquors, wines and
drugs. kashrut regards all wines kosher. Hence food items and
drinks showing the kosher symbol containing alcohol are not

Gelatine is considered kosher regardless of its source of
origin. If the gelatine is prepared from swine, Muslims consider
it haraam (prohibited). Hence foods items such as marshmallows,
yoghurt, etc., showing kosher symbols are not halal.

Enzymes (irrespective of their sources even from non-kosher
animals) in cheese making are considered mere secretion (pirsah
b'almah) according to some kashrut organizations, hence all
cheeses are considered kosher. Muslims look for the source of
the enzyme in cheese making. If it is coming from the swine, it
is considered haraam (forbidden). Hence cheeses showing kosher
symbols may not be halal.

Jews do not pronounce the name of God on each animal while
slaughtering. They feel that uttering the name of God, out of
context, is wasteful. Muslims on the other hand pronounce the
name of Allah on all animals while slaughtering.

The salient differences between kosher and halal have been
illustrated so that Muslim consumers can distinguish halal from

all its followers in all walks of life. Halal brings immense
satisfaction to the Muslim life both now and in the hereafter.
Muslims therefore, do not have to depend on any other set of
laws for want of convenience.

The final, divine laws of Islam are indeed perfect and the best
for all its followers for all time to come.

Muslims in non-Muslim countries should strive to follow the
Islamic injunctions in their diet (as well as in every walk of
life) and establish their own businesses and institutions to
cater to the needs of the Muslim Ummah. By doing so, not only
the identity of the Muslims will be preserved, but they will be
recognized and respected for their beliefs and practices. What a

The ’Ibaad-u-Ragmaan Qadiri Jamaa’ah will set off in the service
of God Most
High, when it celebrates the birthday of His Holy Messenger
Muhammad (Upon him
Be Peace) with the Ceres Muslim Jamaa'ah. On Saturday, 12
February 2011,
congregants at the Trichardt Street Mosque in Ceres will
remember Allah The
Most Bountiful while standing and sitting. A scrumptious cooked
meal will be on
offer afterwards. Everyone is asked to join in.
The ’Ibaad-u-Ragmaan Qadiri Jamaa’ah serves as a vehicle for
learning and the remembrance of Allah. The group consists of
several hundred
Few organizations are so immersed in the religious record and
social symbolism
of Cape Muslims. The ’Ibaad-u-Ragmaan Qadiri Jamaa'ah was not
formed out of
enmity, or opposition to another group. Week after week, they
assert the
Oneness of God through adhkaar. They are afloat on the same sea,
towards Allah, The One Who Is With those who do right.
Free of hysteria, the Jamaa'ah is autonomous and entirely open.
Parents raise
their children in the Jamaa’ah. Many have grown old as part of
The ’Ibaad-u-Ragmaan Qadiri Jamaa’ah chant like slaves, because
what they are – slaves of Allah The Most Beneficent. Adhkaar to
them is a
labour of love.
Some of them sway gently with the rhythm of the dhikr; others
shed tears at the
mention of God's name.
They neither whirl, nor do they hold hands. By reason of its
size, Jamaa’ah
persons don’t position themselves in a circular or semi-circular
formation as
is sometimes found among dhikr groups. During adhkaar, its
members sit or stand
in straight rows instead.
Haji Achmat Damon al-Qadiri al-Chishti is the sheikh of the
Qadiri Jamaa’ah. He had assumed the leadership of the group on
the death of
Haji Mogammad Riefaard Manie al-’Alawi al-Qadiri al-Chishti.
Born on 23
November 1950 in Diep River on the Cape Flats in South Africa,
Haji Achmat is
the son of Imam Muhammad Salih and Hajja Amina Damon.
The second of six children, Haji Mogammad Riefaard Manie came
into the world on
7 August 1946 at 174 Schotsche Kloof Flats in Bo-Kaap. He had
received the
Qadiriyyah mantel from Haji Abduragmaan da Costa al-Qadiri in
1989. Haji
Mogammad Riefaard Manie al-’Alawi al-Qadiri al-Chishti had
passed away on 19
October 2004.
The scholarly Haji Abduragmaan da Costa al-Qadiri was born on
Friday, 10
October 1924 in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape. His date of birth
coincided with
Milad al-Nabi of that year, 1343 Hijri. Having learned under the
Sheikh Ismail ‘Ganief’ Edwards, Haji Abduragmaan da Costa was of
the few
entirely locally educated Cape Muslims of his generation who
understood Arabic.
Equally notable was the trend that he had started by refusing to
accept payment
for teaching others the tenets of their faith. Haji Abduragmaan
da Costa
al-Qadiri had served as the sheikh of the Qadiriyyah Jamaa’ah
from 1962 until
his demise on 30 August 1989.
Unrelated otherwise, these three men easily stand above all
other modern-day
South Africans in furthering the cause of group dhikrullah. They
adhkaar in a way that no other local person has achieved since.
Imam Achmad Moos was the group’s first Hafith al-Qur’an. He had
under Sheikh Muhammad Salih Abadi Solomons and had served as the
Imam of the
Sunni Muhammad Masjid in Rondebosch East from 1969 until his
death in 1986.
Imam Mogammad Kasief Basardien forms part of the latest brood of
huffaath. He
had studied under Sheikh Abdurraghiem Hasan Sallie and the
legendary Sheikh
Muhammad Salih Abadi Solomons. Abdul Waarieth Parker also has
the Holy Book
within his breast. On 28 June 2000, Muneer Manie had the
‘Hafith’ tagged in front of his name. Haji Muneer had received
his hifdh
schooling from Imam Abduraghmaan Salie. Haji Razeen Carelse
qualified on 9
August 2000. Having committed the larger part of the Glorious
Qur’an to
memory in Azaadville, Gauteng, he completed his reading under
the tutelage of
Maulana Mogammad Adiel Johaar and Sheikh Abdullah Awaldien.
Hafith Mogammad
Ridha Abass was ushered into the privileged group during 2006.
Umar Baba
strengthened the local hifdh tradition during 2006 when he
completed his
education under Imam Abduraghmaan Salie. Having studied under
Sheikh Abdullah
Awaldien like his oldest brother Hafith Abdul Waarieth, Mogammad
Hasan Parker
made the grade aged twelve on 12 November 2006. Hafith Mogammad
Hasan had
represented his country with much success at a Quranic recital
competition in
Mecca during 2009 and at the Dubai International Holy Quran
Awards of 2010.
Haji Mogammad Qaasiem Ganief and Adieb Bassier met the standards
at the end of
January 2009, having qualified under Sheikh Abdullah Awaldien.
The 'Ibaad-u-Ragmaan Qadiri Jamaa'ah tries to offer group
adhkaar as an
alternative to social ills such as drug abuse and gangsterism.
A healthy leaning towards orphan adoption exists within the
group. Names are
not mentioned here for reasons of propriety.
The ’Ibaad-u-Ragmaan Qadiri Jamaa’ah continues to travel the
length and
breadth of South Africa in adoration of their Maker.

Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam has stated:
“There is nothing ominous about the month of Safar”. Bukhari
Believing that the month of Safar is inauspicious and
particularly that its
first 13 days are ill-fated or that it is harmful to marry,
propose or travel, etc.
during these days are superstitions which are contrary to the
teachings of
Islam. Such superstitious beliefs strike at the very bedrock of a
Imaan and pose great risk to the spiritual health of a Muslim.
It is also noticed that an increasing amount of Muslims read
and astrological predictions and there are some who even
circulate such
information. It is likely that many of us have not realised how
hated a
practice this is in Islam, nor the extent of Rasoolullah
Sallallaahu Alayhi
Wasallam's condemnation of this act.
Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam has stated:
“He who goes to a fortune-teller to ask him about something,
his Salaah will not be accepted for forty days.” Muslim
“He who goes to a soothsayer or a fortuneteller and believes in
his predictions then he has disbelieved in the revelation sent
to Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam)” Targhib
A true Muslim firmly believes that all conditions, whether they
are adverse
or favourable, come directly from Allah Ta'aala. Specific days,
months or
phenomena have no bearing on the negative descending conditions.

Beaufort West- Water Crisis!

The town of Beaufort-West in the Central Karoo, South Africa is
currently experiencing severe water scarcity. Dam levels are at
their lowest in living memory, and the main supply dam looks to
be near bone-dry.

The town is currently without any surface water sources as its
supply dam is completely empty. It is at present, solely reliant
on groundwater from boreholes, donations of water in tankers and
bottles from individuals and organisations who heed the call to
provide water. Every drop of water is seen as a blessing since
the local Gamka Dam dried up two months ago.

The ongoing drought in Beaufort West has forced municipal
officials to enforce water shedding. The municipality has
restricted its community to twelve (12) Kilolitres per household
per month and completely cuts the water supply every thirty-six
(36) hours. Tankers then supply the households with wash water
and five (5) litres of drinking water per day. No vehicle
washing, irrigation of gardens etc. is allowed.
Al Imdaad Response:
The Al Imdaad Foundation is currently in the process of
facilitating the transportation of water to the region by
collecting water from various surrounding towns. This water is
filled into water tankers which have the capacity to store 32
000 litres of water and is then transported to Beaufort West.
The cost of filling up the tanker is R6 000.


The Al Imdaad Foundation is also looking at the possibility of a
long term solution such as the establishment of boreholes once
negotiations have been finalised and the immediate need for
water has been met.
